When the going gets tough, the tough get rugged – rugged portable computers that is. Group Mobile, a provider of rugged, durable computers for field-use based in Phoenix, has introduced the new Motion F5 semi-rugged tablet PC. The unit is made to withstand the rigors of outdoor use including exposure to heat, wind and rain…yes, even rain!
The Motion F5 tablet has no built-in keyboard, standard for a tablet, but has been built to withstand the bumps and bruises harsher-than-office conditions. The magnesium-alloy frame and chemical resistant body help keep your work in and the environment out. Guarding your data in the F5 are an accelerometer and a shock-mounted hard disk, both of which lower the data loss from the abrupt shock of being dropped. It can also be equipped with an optional solid state hard drive, cutting the number of moving parts and further guarding against data loss.
The Motion F5 weighs a paltry 3.3 pounds and has a built-in handle for easy portability, but it’s still a full-featured computer. It sports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as the ability to connect to 3G mobile networks. The unit can accept written input via an included pen, as well as speech through an onboard microphone. It also has a 2.0 MegaPixel camera in it for work that might require visual documentation.
Speaking of work, the Motion F5 features Microsoft Vista Business or XP Tablet Edition preloaded on its 40GB HDD or 32GB SSD. With up to 2GB of RAM and an Intel Core Solo U1400 (1.4Ghz) processor, the F5 has the power to handle all your tasks with ease. Other features in the unit include an RFID reader, a fingerprint reader for security, a Barcode Scanner and 10.4“ LCD with resolutions up to 1024x768 pixels.
Prices for the Motion F5 start at around $2,689, and units can be configured and purchased from the Group Mobile website (http://www.groupmobile.com). Now you can do your work on the road, in the field and probably even on the trail with the semi-rugged Group Mobile Motion F5, ready to face the heavy lifting with you.
It's the question on everyone's mind: will you (or have you already) picked up the new 3G iPhone?
