Law enforcement isn’t always in a position to make a positive ID on someone. So Motorola is extending the capability of its mobile computers with a new biometric device to help them do just that.
Motorola has released a biometric attachment for two of its handheld computers the MC70 and MC75 enterprise digital assistants. Aimed mostly at the security and law enforcement sector, this device allows agents and officers rapid verification of a person’s identity.
The device is well suited for security or law enforcement where the personnel needs to be on foot but must still have access to information back at a central location. The device could also be utilized for real-time verification of personnel for employment and other reasons.
The system has a GSA FIPS 201 certified (General Services Administration) (Federal Information Processing Standards) fingerprint sensor in the unit which is designed to work well in varying amounts of light and can capture up to 10 fingerprints for mass identification. The device can be used in conjunction with a smart card reader to verify the person’s fingerprint and identity against a smart card carrying identification such as an ePassport, ID card or employee ID.
The biometric unit is also built to be tough and adhere to the same level of ruggedness as the MC70/75. This includes passing a drop test, surpassing operating and storage temperatures and humidity specifications.

The MC70 and MC75 EDAs deliver multimodal voice and data communications, GPS tracking capabilities, integrated 1D/2D barcode scanning and optional auto-focus color camera image capture, in a single, compact and rugged form.
